Q
Please introduce yourself and the name of your band?
A
Eddie Black – Pulse8.
Q
Where are you from and who were your earliest musical influences? Do you remember going to your first concert?
A
I grew up in Florida and moved to KY when I was about 14; my parents were both musicians and were my first influences. I went to see KISS when I was 13, then I discovered Quiet Riot and was hooked.
Q
What about non-musical influences? Who or what else has been influential to you personally?
A
Anyone who has enough determination to achieve their dreams, they usually do.
Q
Are you self taught or did you take lessons?
A
I taught myself by watching my parent’s drummers and asking them questions when I needed to.
Q
How did you originally connect with your band?
A
They were having drummer issues and I was having band issues, we jammed out a couple of times in a basement and that was it.
Q
What stands out to you about your first recording sessions?
A
How much my band and I were on the same page as far as mixes and the way we thought things should be.
Q
What is your band currently up to?
A
Writing new songs for a CD that we hope to record this summer.
Q
Do you get involved with the song writing process?
A
We all do. Our song writing is a 5 person process, everyone has an equal say.
Q
Do you have a favorite brand of drums?
A
Not really, I like Pearl's hardware but I think a lot of drums sound comes from tuning and the setup of the kit.
Q
Who has given the best live drumming performance you’ve seen? Recently I saw Tommy Aldridge and that just blew me away.
A

Matt McDonough from Mudvayne and Tommy Clufetos from Rob Zombie.

Q
What do you do to warm up?
A
Stretch.
Q
Tell us about your current kit set up.
A

Pearl Session customs 24x24 kick, 15” rack tom, 16” & 18” floor toms.
Big drums and turned down guitars are a great match.

Q
Any endorsements?
A
A drummer at my band's level can usually get just as good of a deal buying things from the same person all of the time as they could being endorsed by one or two of the things that they use. All of the endorsements I have been offered have not been very good deals. So no.
Q
What is your take on file sharing?
A
If people don’t want to buy the whole CD they could at least pay .99 cents for the song they want.
Q
Have you ever done, or would you consider, a drum duet?
A
I have never done a drum duet and really have never thought about it. I guess it would be cool.
Q
Any advice for new drummers?
A
Practice, practice, practice.
Q
Everyone has their own perception of success, what is yours?
A
Achieving your dreams and goals.
Q
When do you know you’ve had a satisfying day?
A
A satisfying day is making it to the next one.
Q
What are you looking forward to most this year?
A
Recording a new CD, playing some great shows and hopefully Pulse8 and Rat Pack records taking off and getting noticed. We have all been working our asses off for this.
Q
And lastly, should there be drum rooms in the gym? Research has suggested that a rock drummer needs extraordinary stamina comparable to top athletes.
A
Playing drums is definitely a workout but I don’t think that it is as intense as actually working out. I do both and working out kicks my ass way more than playing a 45 min set no matter how hard I play.
